Lost at Ueno Station? Ueno Park, Ameyoko or Keisei Ueno — Which Way Should You Go?

Lost at Ueno Station guide for Ueno Park, Ameyoko and Keisei Ueno Tokyo Subway Stations

Arrived at Ueno Station but not sure which way to go?

Ueno Station has several exits, and choosing the wrong one can send you in a completely different direction.

The easiest way to remember it is:

Ueno Park, zoo and museums → Park Exit
Ameyoko → Shinobazu Exit
Keisei Ueno / Skyliner → Shinobazu side

Here is the simple version.

1. Going to Ueno Park?

If you are using JR, look for:

Park Exit

This is the convenient side for:

  • Ueno Park
  • Ueno Zoo
  • Tokyo National Museum
  • National Museum of Nature and Science
  • National Museum of Western Art
  • Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum

If your destination is a museum, the zoo or Ueno Park, remember:

JR → Park Exit

2. Going to Ameyoko?

If you are using JR, look for:

Shinobazu Exit

The official Ameyoko website lists JR Ueno Station’s Shinobazu Exit as the closest exit.

If you are using Tokyo Metro Ueno Station:

Exit 7 → about a 2-minute walk

So remember:

JR → Shinobazu Exit
Tokyo Metro → Exit 7

3. Going to Keisei Ueno Station?

Keisei Ueno is separate from JR Ueno Station.

This is especially important if you are taking the:

Keisei Skyliner to Narita Airport

From JR Ueno Station, head toward the Shinobazu side, then follow signs for:

Keisei Ueno

The Skyliner operates between Keisei Ueno and Narita Airport.

4. Park Exit or Shinobazu Exit?

Here is the easiest way to remember the difference:

Park Exit

Use it for:

  • Ueno Park
  • Ueno Zoo
  • museums

Shinobazu Exit

Use it for:

  • Ameyoko
  • walking toward Keisei Ueno

Checking this before leaving the station can save you unnecessary walking.

5. What If You Use the Wrong Exit?

Do not worry.

If you leave from the wrong side of Ueno Station, you usually do not need to take another train.

Check your current location and walk toward your destination.

Ueno Park, Ameyoko and Keisei Ueno are all in the same general area, but they are on different sides of the station.

The important thing is to stop and check your direction before continuing.

Remember This at Ueno Station

If you remember only three things:

  • Ueno Park / Zoo / Museums → Park Exit
  • Ameyoko → Shinobazu Exit
  • Keisei Ueno / Skyliner → Shinobazu side

If you are using Tokyo Metro, remember that its numbered exits are different from JR’s named exits.

Always check whether you are using JR, Tokyo Metro or Keisei before following an exit name or number.
