✅ 1. Find the Station You Want to Go To
First, find your destination station.
If you are using Google Maps, check the nearest Osaka Metro station to your destination.
For example:
Umeda — M16
Shinsaibashi — M19
Namba — M20
Tennoji — M23
These stations are all on the Midosuji Line.
✅ 2. Check the Line Color
Each Osaka Metro line has its own color.
The color helps you find the correct line on the map and station signs.
For example:
🔴 Red = Midosuji Line
If you are looking for the Midosuji Line, look for the red line and the letter M.
✅ 3. Check the Line Color, Letter and Name
Each Osaka Metro line has:
Color + Letter + Line Name

✅ 4. Check the Station Number
Each station also has a number.
A simple way to remember it is:
Color = Line color
Letter = Line name
No. = Station number
For example:
🔴 M16 = Umeda Station
This means:
🔴 M = Midosuji Line
16 = Umeda Station
Nearby stations are:
🔴 M15 = Nakatsu
🔴 M16 = Umeda
🔴 M17 = Yodoyabashi
So even if you cannot read Japanese, the letter and number can help you find the correct station.
✅ 5. Find Your Current Station
Now find the station where you are starting.
Check:
Line color
Line letter
Station number
For example:
🔴 M16 = Umeda Station
If your destination is Namba:
🔴 M16 Umeda → M20 Namba
Now you know your starting station and destination station.
✅ 6. Check Which Direction to Go
Look at the station numbers along the line.
For example:
🔴 M16 Umeda
↓
🔴 M17 Yodoyabashi
↓
🔴 M18 Hommachi
↓
🔴 M19 Shinsaibashi
↓
🔴 M20 Namba
The station numbers can help you understand which direction you are travelling.
If your destination number is higher, you will often travel toward the higher station numbers.
If your destination number is lower, you will often travel toward the lower station numbers.
Always check the destination shown on the platform signs before boarding.
✅ 7. Check If You Need to Transfer
If your destination is on another line, you may need to transfer.
For example, Namba is served by several Osaka Metro lines.
When you transfer, the station name may stay the same, but the line color, letter and station number can change.
🔴 M20 — Midosuji Line
🔵 Y15 — Yotsubashi Line
S16 — Sennichimae Line
After you transfer, check the new:
Color
Letter
Station number
✅ 8. Check the New Line After You Transfer
After changing trains, check the new line again.
For example:
🔴 M20 = Midosuji Line
may change to:
🔵 Y15 = Yotsubashi Line
Follow the signs for the new line and make sure the color and letter match your route.
✅ 9. Check Your Destination Station Number
Remember the station number where you need to get off.
For example:
🔴 M16 → M17 → M18 → M19 → M20
If you start at M16 Umeda and your destination is M20 Namba, the station numbers help you know when your stop is getting close.
✅ 10. Check the Exit Number
Large Osaka Metro stations can have many exits.
After you arrive, look for the exit closest to your destination.
You may see signs such as:
Exit 1
Exit 2
Exit 5
Google Maps can also help you check which exit is closest to where you want to go.
This is especially useful at large stations such as Umeda, Namba and Shinsaibashi.
