Shinjuku Station Without JR: How to Find the Subway, Keio & Odakyu Line

Shinjuku Station Without JR Tokyo Stations

Shinjuku Station is not only a JR station.

You may arrive by Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, Keio Line, or Odakyu Line.

If you are not using JR, don’t worry about memorizing every exit.

Use this simple order:

Line → Station code → East / West / South → Exit

1. Check Which Line You Used

Look at Google Maps, your ticket, or the station signs.

You may see:

  • Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line — M08
  • Toei Shinjuku Line — S01
  • Toei Oedo Line — E27
  • Keio Line / Keio New Line
  • Odakyu Line

Follow the signs for your railway first.

2. Choose East, West or South

Before looking for an exit number, check which side your destination is on.

East
Kabukicho and the busy shopping area.

West
Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and the skyscraper district.

South
Busta Shinjuku, NEWoMan and Takashimaya Times Square.

You do not need to memorize every exit.

First, just choose the correct side.

3. Be Careful With Similar Station Names

This is one of the most confusing things about Shinjuku.

E27 Shinjuku and E01 Shinjuku-nishiguchi are different stations.

You may also see:

Shinjuku-sanchome
Nishi-shinjuku

These are also separate stations — not simply different exits of Shinjuku Station.

So always check the station name and station code.

4. What If You Exit on the Wrong Side?

Don’t panic.

You can still walk between the east and west sides of Shinjuku.

If the underground passages feel confusing, go outside and check your location on Google Maps.

You usually do not need to understand the whole station.

Just ask:

Where am I now?
Which side is my destination on?

5. Still Confused by the Tokyo Subway?

If the line colors, letters and station numbers are confusing, read this first:

It explains how to use:

Color → Line letter → Station number

step by step.

6. Use the Official Shinjuku Terminal Map

If you want to see the whole Shinjuku station area, Shinjuku City also provides an official terminal map.

The Simple Rule

At Shinjuku Station:

1. Check your line
2. Check the station code
3. Choose East, West or South
4. Then find the exit

That’s enough for most trips.
