If you arrive in Umeda for the first time, the station names can be confusing.
You may see all of these names in the same general area:
- Osaka Station
- Umeda Station
- Higashi-Umeda Station
- Nishi-Umeda Station
- Osaka-Umeda Station (Hankyu)
- Osaka-Umeda Station (Hanshin)
They are not all the same station.
However, they are all located within the wider Osaka/Umeda transportation area.
The easiest way to avoid getting lost is to check which railway company and line you actually need.

Quick Answer
Here is the simplest way to remember it:
JR → Osaka Station
Osaka Metro Midosuji Line → Umeda Station (M16)
Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line → Higashi-Umeda Station (T20)
Osaka Metro Yotsubashi Line → Nishi-Umeda Station (Y11)
Hankyu Railway → Osaka-Umeda Station
Hanshin Railway → Osaka-Umeda Station
If a route app tells you to go to “Umeda,” check the railway company and line before following the signs.
Osaka Station = JR
If your train is operated by JR, you need Osaka Station.
JR Osaka Station is the main JR station in the Umeda area.
JR West provides official English maps for both Osaka Station and the wider Umeda area.
JR West – Official Osaka Station Map and Umeda Map
If your route says JR Osaka Station, follow the JR signs.
Do not look for a JR station called “Umeda Station.”
Umeda Station = Osaka Metro Midosuji Line
If you are using the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, your station is:
Umeda Station (M16)
The Midosuji Line connects Umeda with major Osaka areas such as:
- Shin-Osaka
- Yodoyabashi
- Shinsaibashi
- Namba
- Tennoji
So if you are traveling between Umeda and Namba on the Midosuji Line, use Umeda Station (M16).
Do not go to Higashi-Umeda or Nishi-Umeda unless your route tells you to use a different subway line.

Higashi-Umeda Station = Tanimachi Line
Higashi-Umeda Station (T20) is on the Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line.
“Higashi” means east, so a simple way to remember it is:
Higashi-Umeda = East Umeda
Osaka Metro lists connections from Higashi-Umeda to Umeda, Nishi-Umeda, JR, Hankyu and Hanshin.
Osaka Metro – Higashi-Umeda Station T20 Official English Page
If your route tells you to use the Tanimachi Line, look for:
T20 Higashi-Umeda
Do not simply enter Umeda Station on the Midosuji Line because the names look similar.
Nishi-Umeda Station = Yotsubashi Line
Nishi-Umeda Station (Y11) is on the Osaka Metro Yotsubashi Line.
“Nishi” means west, so:
Nishi-Umeda = West Umeda
Osaka Metro lists connections from Nishi-Umeda to Umeda, Higashi-Umeda, JR, Hankyu and Hanshin.
Osaka Metro – Nishi-Umeda Station Y11 Official English Page
If your route says Y11, follow signs for Nishi-Umeda rather than Umeda Station on the Midosuji Line.
Important: The Three Osaka Metro Umeda Stations Are Separate
Umeda, Higashi-Umeda and Nishi-Umeda are all Osaka Metro stations, but they are separate stations.
To transfer between these three stations, you must leave the ticket gates and walk to the other station.
Osaka Metro officially treats these as transfers outside the ticket gates.
For regular tickets and stored-value cards, the transfer between the three Umeda stations must be completed within 30 minutes.
If you take longer than 30 minutes, it will not count as a transfer between the three Umeda stations, and a separate fare is required as a new ride.
Commuter passes and the Osaka 1-Day Pass (Enjoy Eco Card) are excluded from this 30-minute rule.

What Is Hankyu Osaka-Umeda Station?
Hankyu has its own station called:
Osaka-Umeda Station
This is different from JR Osaka Station and Osaka Metro Umeda Station.
Hankyu Osaka-Umeda Station serves:
- Kobe Line
- Takarazuka Line
- Kyoto Line
If you are taking Hankyu toward destinations such as Kobe-Sannomiya, Takarazuka or Kyoto-Kawaramachi, look for Hankyu signs.

What Is Hanshin Osaka-Umeda Station?
Hanshin Railway also has its own station called:
Osaka-Umeda Station
It is separate from:
- Hankyu Osaka-Umeda Station
- JR Osaka Station
- Osaka Metro Umeda Station
Hanshin trains run west from Osaka toward areas such as Amagasaki and Kobe.
So simply seeing the words “Osaka-Umeda” is not enough.
Check whether your route says:
Hankyu
or
Hanshin
before entering the ticket gates.

Osaka Station and Umeda: Are They the Same Place?
Not exactly.
Osaka Station is the JR station.
Umeda is the wider commercial and transportation area around Osaka Station.
Several railway companies use “Umeda” in their station names.
That is why one sign may say Osaka Station, while another nearby sign says Umeda or Osaka-Umeda.
If you see a different station name, you have not necessarily gone to the wrong part of Osaka.
You may simply need to walk to another railway station within the Umeda area.
If You Are at JR Osaka Station but Need Umeda Station
First check which Osaka Metro line you need.
If you need the Midosuji Line, follow signs for:
Osaka Metro / Midosuji Line / Umeda
Osaka Metro’s official Umeda Station map shows connections with JR Osaka Station.
Osaka Metro – Umeda Station Exit & Area Map
Do not automatically follow signs for Higashi-Umeda or Nishi-Umeda.
Those are different Osaka Metro stations on different lines.
If You Need to Transfer Between the Three Metro Stations
First check the station code:
M16 = Umeda
T20 = Higashi-Umeda
Y11 = Nishi-Umeda
You must leave the ticket gates to transfer between these three stations.
For regular tickets and stored-value cards, complete the transfer within 30 minutes.
If more than 30 minutes pass, the transfer is no longer treated as a transfer between the three Umeda stations and a separate fare is required.

If You Are Underground and Completely Lost
Do not keep walking just because the underground passage continues.
Stop and check the railway company, line name and station code.
Look for:
M16 = Umeda / Midosuji Line
T20 = Higashi-Umeda / Tanimachi Line
Y11 = Nishi-Umeda / Yotsubashi Line
If you need JR, follow signs for:
JR / Osaka Station
If you need Hankyu or Hanshin, check the railway company name before following the station signs.
Station codes are often easier to follow than trying to remember several similar Umeda station names.
Why Do Route Apps Show Different Umeda Stations?

Your route may tell you to use:

Do not search only for:
