Anime-style illustration of Kita-Senju Station in Tokyo – Which Exit? Transportation

Arrived at Kita-Senju Station in Tokyo and not sure which exit to use?

Kita-Senju is a major railway interchange served by JR, Tokyo Metro, Tobu Railway, and the Tsukuba Express.

You may see signs for the West Exit, East Exit, Nakacho Exit, North Gate, South Gate, and numbered subway exits.

These signs do not all refer to the same place.

The easiest way to avoid getting lost is to check your destination before choosing a ticket gate or exit.

Which Railway Lines Serve Kita-Senju?

Kita-Senju Station is served by five main railway lines:

  • JR Joban Line
  • Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line (C18)
  • Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line (H22)
  • Tobu Skytree Line (TS09)
  • Tsukuba Express (TX05)

The platforms are located on different levels.

Some train services continue directly onto other railway companies’ lines.

Always check both the railway line and destination shown on the departure display.

JR Joban Line: Rapid or Local?

This is an important distinction.

JR Joban Line rapid services use JR platforms above ground.

Joban Line local services run through the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line and use its underground station area at Kita-Senju.

Do not assume that rapid and local services use the same platforms.

Check your route before changing levels.

West Exit: Marui, Lumine and Shopping

The West Exit (西口) leads to one of the busiest shopping areas around Kita-Senju Station.

Choose this direction for:

  • Kita-Senju Marui
  • Theatre 1010
  • Lumine Kita-Senju
  • West Exit bus stops
  • Taxi stands
  • Senju Mildix shopping complex
  • Shopping streets in western Kita-Senju

Kita-Senju Marui and Theatre 1010

Kita-Senju Marui is part of the Senju Mildix commercial complex.

Theatre 1010 is located in the same development.

If you arrive on the Chiyoda Line, Tokyo Metro lists Exit 4 for Marui and Theatre 1010.

Exit 4 provides elevator access to street level.

Important: Metro Exit 4 has restricted operating hours. It is not available 24 hours a day.

Check the latest official signs and opening hours before using this exit, especially early in the morning or late at night.

Lumine Kita-Senju

Lumine is a shopping complex directly connected to the station.

Tokyo Metro lists Exit 2 for the Lumine station-building area.

If you are already inside the station, follow the Lumine signs.

You may be able to reach the shopping center without going outside.

East Exit: Tokyo Denki University

The East Exit is also called:

East Exit (Denki-guchi / 電大口)

Choose this exit for:

  • Tokyo Denki University, Tokyo Senju Campus
  • Senju-Asahicho
  • Adachi Gakuen
  • Adachi Tax Office
  • Adachi Post Office
  • Nearby restaurants and local shops

Going to Tokyo Denki University

Tokyo Denki University is approximately one minute on foot from the East Exit.

If you arrive on JR, the Hibiya Line, Tobu, or the Tsukuba Express, follow signs for the East Exit (Denki-guchi).

Continue along Gakuen-dori Street toward the university campus.

Arriving on the Chiyoda Line?

There is another useful route.

If you arrive on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line, you can use Exit 2 and the underground public passage to reach the East Exit area.

Follow the underground passage toward the eastern side of the station, then continue along Gakuen-dori Street to Tokyo Denki University.

This route is described in the university’s official access information.

Important: Tokyo Denki University is not the same as Tokyo University of the Arts.

The two universities have campuses in different parts of Kita-Senju.

Nakacho Exit: Police Station and University Campus

The Nakacho Exit (仲町出口) is useful for destinations southwest of the main station area.

Choose this exit for:

  • Senju Police Station
  • Tokyo University of the Arts, Senju Campus
  • Tokyo Art Center
  • Adachi Industrial Center
  • Hello Work Adachi
  • Senju Nakacho
  • Nikko Kaido area

Tokyo University of the Arts

The Senju Campus of Tokyo University of the Arts is located in the Nakacho area.

If you arrive on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line, Exit 1 is listed for the campus and nearby public facilities.

Do not confuse it with Tokyo Denki University near the East Exit.

Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line: Which Numbered Exit?

The Chiyoda Line has underground platforms and its own numbered exits.

ExitMain Destination
Exit 1Senju Police Station, Tokyo University of the Arts
Exit 2Lumine and the underground passage toward East Exit
Exit 4Marui, Theatre 1010, Senju Mildix and West Exit square
Exit 5Tsukuba Express connection area

Important Notes About Exits 4 and 5

Tokyo Metro lists elevators to street level at Exits 4 and 5.

However, Exit 4 has limited operating hours.

If Exit 4 is closed, follow the station signs for another available exit.

If you need step-free access, check the latest Tokyo Metro accessibility information rather than relying only on the nearest exit number.

How to Transfer Between the Five Railway Lines

Kita-Senju has several railway operators sharing one large station complex.

Transfers may involve different levels, concourses, and ticket gates.

JR Joban Line to Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line

JR rapid-service platforms and the Chiyoda Line platforms are located on different levels.

Follow the signs for the Chiyoda Line.

Do not assume that the Hibiya Line and Chiyoda Line platforms are in the same place simply because both are operated by Tokyo Metro.

JR Joban Line to Tsukuba Express

Follow signs for the Tsukuba Express (TX).

TX has its own ticket gates and elevated platforms.

Check whether your train is heading toward Akihabara or Tsukuba.

Tobu Skytree Line to Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line

The Tobu Skytree Line and Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line use closely connected station facilities.

However, the platform areas are different.

Always check the correct platform and destination before boarding.

Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line to Tsukuba Express

From the Chiyoda Line, follow signs for the Tsukuba Express.

Tokyo Metro’s official exit guide lists Exit 5 for the TX station area.

Avoid going outside to the main West Exit square unless the signs or your route require it.

North Gate or South Gate: Why Does It Matter?

More than one railway operator at Kita-Senju uses names such as North Gate and South Gate.

For example, JR has North and South ticket gates, and the Tsukuba Express also has its own North and South ticket gates.

A sign saying “North Gate” does not necessarily mean the JR North Gate.

First identify the railway operator.

Then follow the gate and exit signs for your destination.

Traveling With Luggage, a Stroller or a Wheelchair

Kita-Senju Station has elevators and other accessible facilities.

However, routes differ between operators.

If you need step-free access:

  1. Check the station map for your arrival line.
  2. Follow elevator signs rather than simply choosing the shortest route.
  3. Allow extra time when changing railway companies.
  4. Confirm that the elevator route connects to the correct ticket gate.
  5. Ask station staff if the accessible route is unclear.

The shortest walking transfer may not be step-free.

Common Mistakes at Kita-Senju Station

Mistake 1: Confusing the Two Universities

Tokyo Denki University is near the East Exit.

Tokyo University of the Arts, Senju Campus, is near the Nakacho area.

Check the full name of your destination.

Mistake 2: Assuming All Railway Ticket Gates Are Shared

JR, Tobu, Tokyo Metro, and the Tsukuba Express have different gate and platform arrangements.

Follow signs for the railway operator you need.

Mistake 3: Confusing West Exit With Metro Exit 4

West Exit refers to the western side of the station.

Exit 4 is a numbered Tokyo Metro exit leading toward Marui and the West Exit square.

They are related but belong to different naming systems.

Mistake 4: Choosing the Wrong Joban Line Platform

JR rapid services and local services running through the Chiyoda Line use different platform areas.

Check your train type before boarding.

Mistake 5: Forgetting That Exit 4 Has Limited Hours

Metro Exit 4 is not available around the clock.

If it is closed, follow signs for another exit.

Mistake 6: Ignoring Elevator Routes

A convenient staircase route may not work for everyone.

If you need a step-free transfer, use the official accessibility maps.

Quick Summary

Remember these simple points:

  • West Exit: Marui, Lumine, Theatre 1010, buses and taxis
  • East Exit (Denki-guchi): Tokyo Denki University
  • Nakacho Exit: Tokyo University of the Arts and Senju Police Station
  • Metro Exit 1: Public facilities and Tokyo University of the Arts
  • Metro Exit 2: Lumine and the underground passage toward East Exit
  • Metro Exit 4: Marui and Theatre 1010; limited opening hours
  • Metro Exit 5: Tsukuba Express connection area

Kita-Senju can be confusing because multiple railway companies use the same station complex.

The simplest rule is:

Find your railway line first, then choose the ticket gate or exit for your destination.
