My Card Was Declined at a Japanese ATM. What Should I Do?

Housing&Daily Life

Your card was declined at an ATM in Japan?

Don’t panic. This can happen even if your card normally works overseas.

Try these steps.

💳 1. Check the Card Logo

Make sure the ATM accepts your card brand.

Common supported cards include:

Visa / PLUS
Mastercard / Maestro / Cirrus
JCB
UnionPay
American Express
Discover
Diners Club

🏧 2. Try Another ATM

If one ATM declines your card, try another ATM.

A good place to try is:

Seven Bank ATM
or
Japan Post Bank ATM

Different ATMs may support different cards.

🌍 3. Check Overseas Use Settings

Some cards need overseas cash withdrawal to be enabled.

Check your banking app or card settings for:

Overseas use
International ATM withdrawal
Cash advance

💰 4. Check Your Withdrawal Limit

Your bank may have a daily withdrawal limit.

Try withdrawing a smaller amount.

For example, instead of trying to withdraw a large amount, try a smaller amount first.

🔐 5. Check Your PIN

Make sure you are using the correct PIN.

Too many incorrect attempts may temporarily block your card.

📱 6. Contact Your Card Issuer

If your card still does not work, contact your bank or card company.

They may have blocked the transaction for security reasons.

⚠️ Don’t Keep Trying Again and Again

If the same card keeps getting declined, stop after a few attempts.

Repeated attempts may cause your card to be blocked.

Japan Life Steps Tip

Try another ATM first.

If that doesn’t work, check your overseas-use settings, withdrawal limit and card issuer.
