Planning to visit Ameyoko but not sure which station to use?
You may see both Ueno Station and Okachimachi Station on the map.
The answer is simple:
Both are good choices.
Ameyoko stretches for about 500 meters between Ueno and Okachimachi stations.
So your best station depends on what you want to do before and after visiting Ameyoko.
Which Station Should You Use?
Visiting Ueno Park, museums, or the zoo too?
→ Ueno Station
Want to enter Ameyoko from the Okachimachi side?
→ Okachimachi Station
Want to walk through the whole market?
→ Enter from one station and leave from the other.
From Ueno Station
From JR Ueno Station, use the Shinobazu Exit.
Ameyoko begins very close to the station.
Ueno Station is a good choice if you also plan to visit:
- Ueno Park
- Ueno Zoo
- Tokyo National Museum
- National Museum of Nature and Science
- Shinobazu Pond
You can explore the Ueno area first and then walk toward Ameyoko.
From Okachimachi Station
From JR Okachimachi Station, use the North Exit.
Ameyoko is also very close from this side.
If you are already near Okachimachi, there is no need to travel to Ueno Station first.
This is a convenient way to enter Ameyoko from its southern end.
Common Confusion Point: Ameyoko Is Not Only at Ueno
Ameyoko is often introduced as a sightseeing spot in Ueno.
Because of this, some visitors may think:
Ameyoko = Ueno Station
But the shopping street actually runs between Ueno and Okachimachi.
An easy way to remember it is:
Ueno → north end
Okachimachi → south end
Both stations are useful.
A Simple Way to Explore Ameyoko
You do not need to return to the station where you started.
For example:
Ueno Station → Ameyoko → Okachimachi Station
or:
Okachimachi Station → Ameyoko → Ueno Station
This is an easy way to walk through the market without backtracking.
Quick Summary
Ueno Station
→ Shinobazu Exit
→ Better if you are also visiting Ueno Park, museums, or the zoo
Okachimachi Station
→ North Exit
→ Convenient for entering from the southern side of Ameyoko
If Ameyoko is your main destination, either station works.
The easiest thing to remember is:
Ameyoko is between Ueno and Okachimachi stations.
