Shinjuku Station has many ticket gates, underground passages, and exits.
This guide focuses on JR Shinjuku Station
Choosing the wrong exit can leave you far from your destination. Before leaving the ticket gate, check whether you need the east, west, or south side of the station.

East Side: Kabukicho and Golden Gai
Follow signs for the East Gate or East Exit area if you are going to:
- Kabukicho
- Golden Gai
- Godzilla Road
- The Shinjuku-sanchome shopping area
These places are on the east side of the station, but they are not directly beside the ticket gate.
After reaching street level, check Google Maps again to find your final destination.
If you are going to Isetan Shinjuku, Shinjuku-sanchome Station is closer. From JR Shinjuku Station, follow signs toward the east side.
West Side: Government Buildings and Skyscrapers
Follow signs for the West Gate or West Exit area if you are going to:
- Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
- Nishi-Shinjuku
- The skyscraper district
- Hotels on the west side
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is about a 10-minute walk from the West Exit. It is not immediately outside the station.
Be careful not to confuse the bus stops near the West Exit with Busta Shinjuku. Busta Shinjuku is on the south side of the station.
South Side: Busta Shinjuku, NEWoMan and Takashimaya
Busta Shinjuku
If you are using JR, follow signs for the New South Gate.
Busta Shinjuku is directly connected to the New South Gate and is about a two-minute walk away.
The New South Gate is open from 5:45 a.m. to midnight. Outside these hours, use the South Gate, which is about a four-minute walk away.
Check the terminal name on your bus reservation before leaving the station.
NEWoMan Shinjuku
For NEWoMan Shinjuku, follow signs for:
- Miraina Tower Gate
- Koshu-kaido Gate
- New South Gate
Takashimaya Times Square
For Takashimaya Times Square, use the:
- New South Gate
- Miraina Tower Gate
Both are about a two-minute walk from Takashimaya.
What If You Use the Wrong Exit?
Do not panic. You do not need to take another train.
If you are outside the JR ticket gates and need to move between the east and west sides, look for signs for the East-West Passage.
You can also ask a station employee:
How can I get to the East Gate?
How can I get to the West Gate?
If you are still inside the ticket gates, show your destination to a station employee before leaving.
You can show this Japanese sentence:
この場所へ行くには、どの出口がいいですか?
It means:
Which exit should I use for this place?
Do Not Rely Only on GPS Underground
GPS can be inaccurate inside Shinjuku Station.
While underground:
- Follow the station signs.
- Check the name of the gate or exit.
- Use a nearby building as a landmark.
- Check Google Maps again after reaching street level.
The easiest rule to remember is:
- East: Kabukicho and Golden Gai
- West: Government buildings and skyscrapers
- South: Busta Shinjuku, NEWoMan and Takashimaya
