Right Station, Wrong Exit: Why Do We Do This Even When We Know Better?

Transportation

You got off at the right station.

You know you should check the exit.

But somehow, you still follow the first EXIT sign you see.

A few minutes later:

“Wait… this is the wrong side.”

Sound familiar?

Your Brain Feels Like the Trip Is Over

While riding the subway, you are checking the line, station names, transfers, and directions.

Then you finally see your station.

Tokyo. Shibuya. Namba.

You feel relieved.

“I made it.”

But you are not quite there yet.

You still need to find the right exit.

Because the difficult part feels finished, it is easy to stop paying attention and simply follow the nearest EXIT sign.

“I’ll Just Check Google Maps Outside”

There is another reason we go upstairs too quickly.

Underground, you cannot see the streets, buildings, or landmarks around you.

So it feels natural to think:

“It will be easier once I’m outside.”

Sometimes it is.

But at a large station, the wrong exit may put you on the opposite side of a major road or several minutes away from your destination.

That is when you realize:

Right station. Wrong exit.

It Happens Around the World

This is not only a Tokyo problem.

It can happen in New York, London, Seoul, or almost any city with a large subway system.

The signs may be different, but the mistake is surprisingly similar:

We arrive at the right station and relax too soon.

Try This Instead

When you reach your station, don’t go upstairs immediately.

Stop for just 10 seconds.

Check your destination.

Check your exit.

Then head outside.

You reached the station. But you haven’t reached your destination yet.
