Arriving at Shin-Osaka Station and not sure where to go?
Shin-Osaka connects the Shinkansen (bullet train), JR conventional trains, and Osaka Metro Midosuji Line.
The most important thing is to choose the correct ticket gate before following the signs to your destination.
Here’s a simple guide to help you find your way.
1. Understand the Station Layout
Shin-Osaka Station has several levels.
| Floor | Main facilities |
|---|---|
| 4F | Shinkansen platforms |
| 3F | Shinkansen ticket gates, JR conventional train gates and transfer gate |
| 2F | Access to Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, shops and station passages |
| 1F | Some bus stops and ground-level facilities |
The JR and Shinkansen ticket gates are separate from the Osaka Metro ticket gates.
2. Shinkansen to Midosuji Subway Line
If you arrive by Shinkansen and want to travel to Umeda, Shinsaibashi, Namba or Tennoji, the Midosuji Line is a convenient option.
Follow these steps:
- Get off the Shinkansen on the 4th floor.
- Go down to the Shinkansen concourse on the 3rd floor.
- Leave through the Shinkansen Central Gate (中央口).
- Follow the signs for Osaka Metro Midosuji Line.
- Go down to the 2nd floor and continue toward the subway station.
- Enter through an Osaka Metro ticket gate and follow the signs for trains toward Nakamozu.
Important: Do not use the Shinkansen-to-JR Transfer Gate for this route. That gate is for transferring to JR conventional trains.
The Midosuji Line is marked in red and Shin-Osaka is station M13.
3. Shinkansen to JR Conventional Trains
If you’re continuing by JR train, the route is different.
- Leave the Shinkansen platform and go down to the 3rd floor.
- Follow the signs for JR Lines or the Shinkansen Transfer Gate (乗換口).
- Pass through the transfer gate using your valid ticket or tickets.
- Follow the signs for your JR departure platform.
You do not normally need to leave the station’s ticketed area when making a valid Shinkansen-to-JR transfer.
If your ticket or transfer procedure is unclear, ask the station staff before passing through a gate.
4. Which Midosuji Line Platform Do You Need?
At Shin-Osaka Station, the Midosuji Line serves two directions.
| Destination | Direction |
|---|---|
| Umeda | Nakamozu |
| Yodoyabashi | Nakamozu |
| Hommachi | Nakamozu |
| Shinsaibashi | Nakamozu |
| Namba | Nakamozu |
| Tennoji | Nakamozu |
| Esaka | Minoh-kayano |
For central Osaka, including Umeda and Namba, follow the signs for Nakamozu.
Check the platform signs before boarding.
5. Which Subway Exit Should You Use?
Osaka Metro Shin-Osaka Station has exits numbered 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
These numbers refer to subway station exits, not Shinkansen ticket gates.
| Exit | Main destinations |
|---|---|
| 1 | JR Shin-Osaka North Gate, Shinkansen, Hankyu Highway Bus Terminal |
| 2 | Miyahara 1–2 chome |
| 4 | Miyahara 3–4 chome, Nishimiyahara, SORA Shin-Osaka 21, City Bus |
| 5 | JR Shin-Osaka Station, airport bus |
| 6 | Highway buses, Shin-Midosuji west side, Nishinakajima 7-chome |
| 7 | Nishinakajima 5–7 chome |
If you’re transferring to JR or the Shinkansen, follow the railway connection signs rather than choosing a street exit simply by its number.
If you’re going to a hotel, check the hotel’s address and the nearest recommended exit.
6. Shin-Osaka Station vs Osaka Station
These are two different stations.
Shin-Osaka Station
- Main Shinkansen stop in Osaka
- JR conventional train connections
- Osaka Metro Midosuji Line
Osaka Station
- Major JR station in the Umeda area
- Convenient for shopping, restaurants and hotels
- Connections to other railway stations around Umeda
If your hotel is near Osaka Station or Umeda, you may need to take another train after arriving at Shin-Osaka.
7. Common Mistakes at Shin-Osaka
Mistake 1: Confusing Shin-Osaka with Osaka Station
They are separate stations.
Mistake 2: Using the wrong transfer gate
The Shinkansen Transfer Gate connects with JR conventional trains, not directly with the Midosuji subway.
Mistake 3: Confusing ticket gates with station exits
A ticket gate leads into or out of a railway’s paid area. A station exit leads toward another part of the station or the surrounding area.
Mistake 4: Choosing the wrong subway direction
For Umeda, Shinsaibashi and Namba, take the Midosuji Line toward Nakamozu.

Final Tip
At Shin-Osaka Station, decide what you need first:

Then follow the signs for that destination.
You don’t need to memorize the entire station layout.
