Matcha or Green Tea Powder? Here’s What to Buy
Shopping for matcha in Japan?
You may see several green tea powders that look almost identical. But they are not the same.
Quick answer: If you want to make a matcha latte, look for plain matcha labeled 抹茶.
Four Japanese Tea Labels to Know
| Japanese | English | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 抹茶 | Matcha | Matcha lattes and traditional matcha |
| 粉末緑茶 | Powdered Green Tea | Everyday green tea |
| インスタント緑茶 | Instant Green Tea | Quick, easy-to-dissolve tea |
| 抹茶入り緑茶 | Green Tea with Matcha | Regular green tea with some matcha |
Important: Powdered green tea is not necessarily matcha. And green tea with matcha is not necessarily 100% matcha.
Want to Make a Matcha Latte?
It’s simple!
- Add 1–2 teaspoons of pure matcha to a cup.
- Mix with a little warm water until smooth.
- Add 150–200 ml of hot or cold milk.
- Add sugar or another sweetener if you like.
For an easier option, look for 抹茶ラテの素 (Matcha Latte Mix). It may already contain sugar or milk ingredients.
How to Choose at the Store
Check the product name and ingredients together. Genuine matcha may list its ingredient simply as 茶 (tea).
Not sure? Ask:
抹茶はありますか?
Matcha wa arimasu ka?
“Do you have matcha?”
Final Tip
For a real homemade matcha latte, choose pure matcha. For convenient everyday tea, powdered or instant green tea may be a better choice.
